Job Description
HEAVY DUTY DIESEL MECHANIC
Under general supervision, the Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic assigned to the Fleet Operations Division of the General Services Department will perform duties related to the preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the City’s medium/heavy duty trucks and equipment, including but not limited to emergency vehicles, park maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators (stationary and mobile). Work is performed on vehicles and equipment owned by the City of Detroit.
Examples of Duties Follow all safety procedures within local, state, and federal guidelines.
Ensure a clean and safe work environment.
Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment such as computerized diagnostic devices and engine analyzers.
Stay up to date with continual education and new technology through training sessions, workshops, and courses.
Recommend preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance and reduce downtime, including checking and changing oil and filters, lubricating, inspecting and adjusting brakes and steering, and checking fluids.
Inspect parts for wear and damage; repair or replace faulty parts including engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, wheel bearings, and electrical components.
Repair or replace components on winches, such as cables, ropes, and gears.
Overhaul on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, and related components like diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative fuel engines, carburetors, fuel injection systems, transmissions, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Maintain and repair hydraulic pumps, pneumatics, reservoirs, actuators, hoses, pumps, valves, and controls.
Repair and maintain motors, including hoses, cylinders, power sources, accumulators, and relief valves.
Maintain after-treatment components such as diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), diesel particulate filters (DPF), diesel exhaust fluid injection (DEF), and selective catalyst reduction (SCR).
Repair and maintain braking systems, including compressors, brake chambers, drums, slack adjusters, dryers, air tanks, foot valves, brake lines, safety valves, master cylinders, wheel cylinders, rotors, brakes boosters, calipers, and sensors.
Diagnose mechanical and emissions failures using visual inspection and electronic testing instruments.
Rebuild engines, including replacing head gaskets, water pumps, and vacuum pumps.
Repair differentials and drive systems, including axles, tandem axles, jake brakes, seals, and bearings.
Maintain fuel injection systems, including injectors, filters, tanks, lines, sensors, engine valves, pumps, and other major components.
The ideal candidate must possess the ability to operate computerized systems, diagnose mechanical and safety issues, and perform repairs and overhauls on heavy equipment and trucks without supervision. Must be able to operate hand tools and read/write English, interpret manufacturer specifications, utilize computers for data organization and report generation, perform arithmetic calculations, and follow instructions. The candidate should work effectively with customers and vendors, operate in various environments and weather conditions, and be available on weekends.
Job Prerequisites, Licenses, & Certifications Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
State of Michigan Class "B" commercial driver’s license (with B endorsement) preferred.
Must be certified in two or more of the following areas:
HD Engine Repair
HD Braking Systems
HD Suspension & Steering Systems
HD Electrical Systems
Possess small and large hand tools, rolling tool storage, and power/air tools necessary for all assigned work.
