Position Overview

The General Manager is responsible for leading Petcos vision of Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World. to develop a high-performing team that delivers top-line sales growth while ensuring welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM leads a team of Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center. The role focuses on people (talent acquisition, training, and development), performance (guest service, sales, and expense control), and process (SOPs and policies) to drive profitability. A passion for pets, ability to inspire and lead, and a drive for process excellence and results are required.

People

  • Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.
  • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
  • Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly partners in all areas required to run the store to Petco standards, including effective rollout selling models.
  • Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement of partners.
  • Lead a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration; provide clear direction.
  • Ensure quick and courteous service by helping partners determine guest needs and share product knowledge to meet customer needs.
  • Responsible for partner performance management in the Pet Care Center.
  • Demonstrate and support a continuous improvement and growth mindset.

Performance

  • Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
  • Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to maximize productivity and achieve goals.
  • Review financial and operational reporting regularly, including visits and audits.
  • Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies leveraging Petco programs and resources to improve and grow the business.
  • Market the Pet Care Center and oversee planning of on-site and community events (adoptions, school visits, local promotions, and welfare events).

Process

  • Ensure proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals.
  • Ensure merchandise is properly priced, displayed, and stocked; adjust merchandising as needed to align with visual standards and monthly planning guidelines.
  • Complete and submit accounting, inventory management and payroll paperwork on time; manage expenses within budget.
  • Maintain the Pet Care Centers appearance and safety procedures.
  • Protect pets and merchandise and minimize loss by following standards and procedures, including safety and inventory controls.
  • Open/close the Pet Care Center according to policies and procedures, especially safety and security.
  • Maintain a professional image, appearance, and cleanliness of the center.

Other Essential Duties

  • Model inspiring leadership; provide proactive leadership to maintain a positive business climate and motivate teams in alignment with company goals.
  • Promote safety; ensure policies, procedures, and safety standards are observed and implemented.
  • Foster a collaborative culture; promote teamwork and idea sharing to improve efficiency and guest engagement.
  • Prioritize talent development; ensure a strong bench with ongoing development and opportunities.
  • Engage and be present; represent Petcos brand with high standards in a positive working environment.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED; proficiency in business acumen, analysis, problem-solving, and people development & guest service.
  • Strong communication and computer skills.
  • Three or more years of management experience (retail management preferred).
  • Knowledge of general business practices; strong organizational skills.
  • Customer service orientation; ability to instruct others; professional appearance and demeanor; genuine interest in animals.
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Internal candidates may be required to complete PETCO Management Achievement Program modules.

Supervisory Responsibility

The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and all Pet Care Center partners.

Physical requirements include indoor work with occasional lifting (up to 50 pounds), bending, kneeling, and standing for long periods. Some travel may be required.
