Base pay range: $55,000.00/yr - $102,000.00/yr

Position Overview

The General Manager is responsible for leading Petcos vision of Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World. to develop a high-performing team that delivers top-line sales growth while focusing on the welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM leads a team of Pet Care Center managers, leaders, and partners, and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center. The role drives business through a focus on people (talent acquisition, training, and development), performance (guest service, sales, and expense control), and process (standard operating procedures and policies), with the goal of overall profitability. This position requires a passion for pets, the ability to inspire and lead a team, a focus on process excellence, and a drive for results.

Responsibilities

  • Execute all Pet Care Center activity to create the best possible partner, guest, and pet experience; exercise discretion and independent judgment as needed.
  • Lead and manage people and pet care operations, ensuring tasks are performed skillfully and consistently.
  • Perform essential job duties satisfactorily and support reasonable accommodations to enable qualified individuals to perform essential functions.

People

  • Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.
  • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.
  • Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners to run the store efficiently and to Petco standards, including effective rollout selling models.
  • Create a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement of partners.
  • Lead and foster a culture of teamwork and inclusion; provide clear direction and priorities.
  • Ensure quick and courteous service by helping partners determine guest needs and sharing product knowledge to suggest appropriate solutions.
  • Responsible for all partner performance management in the Pet Care Center.
  • Demonstrate and support a continuous improvement and growth mindset.

Performance

  • Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.
  • Schedule and adjust labor hours and payroll to maximize productivity and achieve sales and payroll goals.
  • Review financial and operational reporting regularly, including Pet Care Center visits and audit results.
  • Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies leveraging Petco programs to improve and grow the business.
  • Market the Pet Care Center and its products; oversee on-site and community events such as adoptions, school visits, and local promotions.

Process

  • Ensure proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals.
  • Price, display, and stock merchandise according to inventory levels and visual standards; adjust merchandising under store needs and monthly ad planner guidelines.
  • Complete and submit accounting, inventory, and payroll paperwork promptly; keep expenses within budgeted levels.
  • Maintain the Pet Care Centers appearance per operational standards and safety procedures.
  • Protect pets and merchandise; adhere to standards and procedures including safety, inventory control, and loss prevention.
  • Open/close the Pet Care Center in accordance with policies and safety protocols.
  • Maintain the Pet Care Centers professional image, appearance, and cleanliness.

  • Model inspiring leadership and proactive guidance to maintain a positive business climate aligned with company goals.
  • Promote safety by observing and implementing Petco policies and safety standards; prioritize the safety of partners, guests, and pets.
  • Foster a collaborative culture that encourages ideas to improve efficiency and guest engagement and satisfaction.
  • Prioritize talent development and maintain a strong talent bench through training and recruitment.
  • Engage and be present by representing the brand with high standards in a positive, fun working environment.

Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; proficiency in basic business finance, analysis, problem-solving, and a strong focus on people development and guest service.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Three or more years of management experience or the equivalent; prior retail management experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of general business practices and strong organizational skills; customer service aptitude and animal interest are essential.
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle. Completion of PETCO Management Achievement Program Modules and internal management roles may be required for internal candidates.

Supervisory Responsibility

The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners and services.

Work Environment

The majority of duties are indoors; occasional stocking, carry-outs, and bank deposits may require leaving the Pet Care Center briefly. This role involves bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. Some travel may be required.

Contacts

Continuous contact with the public at the Pet Care Center and related events; regular interaction with other departments, Distribution Centers, and Support Centers. External contact may be needed for coordinating merchandise returns, ordering parts, repairs, vaccination clinics, events, and vendor meetings.
