Job Description

A Field Service Mechanic for a concrete road construction company is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of heavy diesel and construction equipment at various job sites. This position is essential for minimizing equipment downtime and ensuring smooth project completion.

Duties and responsibilities

• Perform field diagnostics and repairs : Travel to job sites to troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on a variety of concrete construction equipment, including pavers, screeds, mixers, dozers, excavators, and loaders.
• Conduct preventative maintenance : Follow a proactive maintenance schedule to inspect, service, and lubricate equipment, identifying and addressing potential problems before they lead to major breakdowns.
• Use diagnostic technology : Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment, software, and electronic measuring tools to accurately assess equipment performance and pinpoint the root cause of malfunctions.
• Manage parts and inventory : Order and track necessary parts and materials, ensuring the service vehicle is well-stocked for common repairs.
• Complete paperwork and documentation : Maintain accurate and timely electronic and physical records of all service calls, repairs performed, and parts used.
• Fabricate and modify parts : Use welding and other fabrication techniques to repair damaged parts or modify equipment as needed to restore functionality.
• Operate and transport equipment : Move equipment around job sites, and, when needed, assist with picking up and delivering equipment or parts.

• Ensure safety compliance : Adhere to all company, federal, and state safety policies and procedures, creating a safe work environment for yourself and others.
• Travel : Must travel frequently to various job sites within the company's service area.

• Flexibility : Availability to work long hours, including nights and weekends, to meet project deadlines and handle emergency service calls.

Required skills and qualifications

• Experience : Proven experience (typically 3–5 years) as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or Diesel Mechanic, preferably with concrete paving or other heavy construction equipment.
• Technical knowledge : Strong mechanical aptitude and expertise in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and power trains.
• Problem-solving abilities : Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills to quickly identify complex issues and determine effective repair solutions.
• Tools : Must own a comprehensive set of personal tools applicable to the position.
• Communication : Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with customers, supervisors, and other team members effectively.
• Computer proficiency : Ability to use computer systems and software for diagnostics, service reports, and parts ordering.
• Licensing : Valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required; a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is often preferred.

Physical requirements and work environment

• Physical stamina : Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), climbing, bending, and working in tight or awkward spaces.
• Work conditions : Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, and able to handle exposure to noise, dust, and grease.
