Job Description and Duties

The position of Delta Senior Advisor, CEA A is an exciting opportunity to serve as a member of the Department’s Ecosystem Conservation Division, providing vision, leadership, management, assessment, and strategic planning for the design and implementation of our mission. The Delta Senior Advisor is responsible for leading Department planning and permitting efforts for the Delta Conveyance Program with the Natural Resources Agency, Department of Water Resources (DWR), Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and other agencies and serves as Department management lead on various working groups addressing specific science and management issues affecting the Delta and the Departments policy. The position functions in a Senior Advisor role with statewide responsibilities which require collaboration with staff in every region, branch and division, as appropriate for specific assignments, to identify, research and develop policies and procedures and provide strategic planning support. Public contacts made in the course of this work are extremely sensitive and involve a wide variety of special interest groups. Errors in applying the best available information or communication practices may have extremely significant consequences for the public, the Department and trust resources.


Additionally, the Delta Senior Advisor:

  • Implements Department policy and direction regarding fish and wildlife conservation in the Delta and Delta tributaries with Regions and Branches. Works at the executive level with other state agencies and local governments on efforts to implement the provisions of the Delta Reform Act of 2009.
  • Coordinates and leads Department participation in implementation of science and restoration efforts in the Delta, including the Yolo Bypass-Cache Slough Partnership, Sacramento River Science Partnership, Winter Run Action Plan, and other similar efforts. Make presentations at meetings and conferences on the Departments implementation efforts and policy positions regarding the Delta, California Endangered Species Act compliance, planning efforts, species management, and scientific programs. Represents the Department to the media on topics of local and statewide importance.
  • Develops and implements policy for science initiatives and leads Department activities associated with the Interagency Ecological Program, the Collaborative Science and Adaptive Management Process for the State and Federal Water Projects, and other multiparty science initiatives in the Delta.
  • Represents the Department before Boards and Commissions on issues related to Delta fish and wildlife management and water management, including emergency drought response in coordination with the State Water Resources Control Board. Serves as liaison with Delta Stewardship Council, Independent Science Board and Science Program (CDFW representative on Delta Plan Interagency Implementation Committee and Science Steering Committee); and Delta Conservancy.

Working Conditions

This position is in an office environment and involves sitting most of the time, and the use of a computer and standard office equipment. Occasional travel may be required.
