Communications Intern

Our Children's Trust is seeking a Communications Intern to join our Communications team.

Our Mission

Our Children's Trust is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides strategic, campaign-based legal services to youth from diverse backgrounds to secure their legal rights to a safe climate. We work to protect the Earth's climate system for present and future generations by representing young people in global legal efforts to secure their binding and enforceable legal rights to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate based on the best available science. We support our youth clients and amplify their voices before the third branch of government in a highly strategic legal campaign that includes targeted media, education, and public engagement to support the youths' legal actions. Our legal work guided by constitutional, public trust, human rights laws, and the laws of nature aims to ensure systemic and science-based climate recovery planning and remedies at federal, state, and global levels. We seek legally-binding, countrywide and/or statewide science-based Climate Recovery Plans that will return atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations to levels below 350 ppm by the year 2100.

Position Summary

This is a voluntary, unpaid internship that will assist in advancing OCT's communication and development team which supports the overall mission of Our Children's Trust to secure the legal right to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate for current and future generations through its coordination of a global legal campaign. The Communications intern will directly support the Communications & Development team with research, and OCT works closely with qualified interns to support our critical mission, placing a premium on careful, accurate, and self-directed work. We are seeking experienced interns with excellent research, writing, and communication skills, who are responsive, work independently, take initiative, flexible, and think creatively to find solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Create and support internal reporting materials, including monthly and quarterly Communications Board reports
  • Track and document media coverage, compiling relevant stories for internal and external use
  • Update and maintain website content, such as:
    • Media coverage page
    • Homepage updates
    • Case pages (e.g., updating plaintiff age details)
  • Assist with the development of presentation materials, including:
    • Master communications deck
    • Science and research-focused deck
    • Case-specific decks tailored for legal and advocacy audiences
  • Draft and update bios for plaintiffs, staff, and law clerks
  • Assist with drafting social media content and web content

Required Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Facebook).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Ability to research and synthesize information clearly.

Time Commitment

This position is part-time and can be completed remotely. Working schedule will be determined by organizational needs, team schedules, and intern availability. Preference will be given to interns who can commit to working at least 10 hours per week. Extra hours may be requested during key events, including tabling, or community outreach events. The intern can be located anywhere in the United States but must be available during Eastern time zone working hours.

Education and Preferred Experience

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, English, or a related field.
  • Experience writing blog posts, newsletters, press releases, or social media content (can be academic or personal projects).
  • Familiarity with content creation tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or video editing platforms is a plus.

Compensation:

Internships are unpaid; however, Our Children's Trust is willing to support students in securing outside funding or academic credit for their work.
